The South African government has applauded the achievement by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) in their recent investigation of mal-administration and fraud within the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) and described it as “remarkable progress”.
“This will ensure the necessary steps can be taken to hold accountable persons or organizations implicated in the unlawful misappropriation of funds earmarked to benefit the poor,” said the minister in the presidency Mondli Gungubele as he briefed the media in Pretoria.
Earlier before the investigation feedback, the SIU had red to the parliament’s trade and industry portfolio committee on its investigation which had begun in November 2020, shortly after President Ramaphosa signed a proclamation that allow the department to probe alleged corruption involving the NLC.
“The SIU investigation has uncovered a web of corruption related to NLC funding and flow of funds to NLC officials, board members and their family members. The SIU is pursuing all individuals involved in the siphoning of NLC money”
