South Africa’s president, Cyril Ramaphosa has on Thursday revealed that his country has been asked to intervene in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine for possible resolution.
Rampahosa, unfortunately, did not reveal who made the request and did not give details on how the mediation was going to take place.
Russia and Ukraine however has yet to make any official comments to affirm the mediation process by South Africa.
The South African president in a tweet said that, he has always intended to have an understanding of the current situation between Russia and Ukraine and that if necessary, through the help of agencies can they solve both conflicting countries’ differences.
South Africa and Russia have been long term partners and have built a friendly relationship which had began in the Soviet Union era when they trained anti-apartheid activists during the cold war.
South Africa was part of the 35 countries that voted to abstain during the previous UN resolutionn where the majority of the countries criticized Russia’s action in Ukraine.
The Kremlin said in a statement that the leaders had sent congratulatory messages on the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Africa.
The two presidents also “assure their commitment to further develop a bilateral strategic partnership, nothing, in particular, their readiness to expand trade, economic and humanitarian cooperation, as well as joint Covid – 19 response efforts”
